Mary Magdalene acts as both narrator and participant in this movie from the makers of The Jesus Film. She traces the story of four women whose lives Jesus touched: One woman caught in the scandal of adultery, another rejected because of her promiscuity, a third because of her shameful condition and a widow cast away by society. A thread of shame, sorrow and hopelessness painfully weaves it's way through the lives of these women, but Jesus enters their lives and changes them forever.

The overwhelming conclusion of this 94-minute movie is that being a prophet is tough.  Jeremiah (Patrick Dempsey) is repeatedly imprisoned and beaten, dropped into a muddy well face first, and forced to witness the stabbing death of his fiancée.  And all for repeating messages from God, most of them urging the Judeans to submit to Babylon's King Nebuchadnezzar (Klaus Maria Brandauer).  Dempsey gives an earnest performance, ably assisted by a strong supporting cast.  Writer-director Harry Winer spends the first part of the film on Jeremiah's formative years of visions, moving on to his contentious relationship with King Zedekiah, who ultimately--and tragically--listened to his general (Oliver Reed) rather than the prophet.  This bleak film ends with the fall of Jerusalem to the Babylonians and Jeremiah's self-comforting thought that the city will rise again.  (Parents should be aware of some disturbing violence: in addition to Jeremiah's fiancée's murder, Zedekiah sees his sons fatally stabbed before he is killed.)

This film, based on the Bible's book of Genesis, is something akin to a dramatic reading with visuals.  The text of Genesis is read by a narrator, who at times appears as an elderly desert nomad telling the story to a small boy and other members of their extended Bedouin family. These presentations make historical sense, as the biblical tales were passed along as oral history for generations.  During the story of the creation of the heaven and the earth, the visuals tend toward nature photography alternated with scenes of the venerable storyteller, but during later episodes, actors play some of the characters from the Bible.  A story of Adam and Eve is dramatized in a film montage, as are the stories of Cain and Abel.  More inventive cinematography, utilizing modern clips of warfare and destruction, are used to illustrate some Old Testament pronouncements about the evils practiced by mankind.  Noah's instruction to build the ark is portrayed, and in an elaborate segment, the building of the ark and its use during the great flood is shown.  Filmed in the Moroccan desert.  Approximately 93 minutes.
